Burn The City (Game) Review by Bobby LePire. Edited by Courtney McAllister.

Kaiju films might have a niche audience, but they are popular enough for the look of Godzilla to be iconic; and for his basic powers (super strength, atomic fireblasts) to be common knowledge. So, what do you do when you want to create a silly kaiju game but don’t have the rights to the King of Monsters? Well, if you are developer Josh Brown, you tweak things just enough to be recognizable but still different.

“Burn The City”, an Android/ Apple casual game, does just that; and does it very well! You play as an unnamed giant, fire breathing green lizard. You know, the classic kaiju monster. There are three main chapters- Night, Dawn, and Space. The first two chapters each have forty-five levels, and Space has ten, for a grand total of 100 levels. That is a lot of play time, right there. Then there is Battle Mode, which has four levels.

In each of the chapters proper, you are charged with burning the city (shocking, I know!). The first few chapters are fairly unassuming and easy, to get you used to the gameplay. Touch and hold your index finger to the screen, and move your crosshairs to your desired target and release. There are always multiple buildings, and hitting more than a single structure with a fireball increases your score. Certain buildings already have weak points from the start of a level, and hitting them there and destroying them quickly also increases your score. There is a time bonus to be had, so try to destroy it all as quickly as possible.

As you progress, you’ll notice wooden crates with various glowing colors. If you hit them, you gain power-ups. Some are dynamite, which gives a larger area of effect for your explosions; then there is acid breath, which blasts straight through, so you can hit several buildings at once. There are also missiles, which grant more precise targeting. One can also acquire power ups by hitting and shooting down planes when they are flying by. Hitting the various planes, blimps, tanks, etc., again, increases your points. For each level, you want to acquire enough points to move on, and if you do very well, you’ll be awarded a bronze, silver, or gold medal.

However, just merely firing upon buildings and the occasional vehicle is far too simple. Thus, later levels in Night, and all of the next two levels (to varying degrees) also have some puzzle elements to them. The first level in Chapter Two (Dawn), has a city underneath some floating rocks, falling wooden beams to cover up the gaps between the rocks, a wrecking ball that if shot down properly will roll over part of the city, and a TNT power-up blocked by a wooden stand that if shot down will cause a stone wall to block it. Figuring out the best combo to get the most points within these puzzles is where half the fun lies with this game. But that is nothing compared to the first Space level. Space has no gravity (no duh), so precision and timing are everything here. It can be quite frustrating, but still fun as hell.

Finally, there’s Battle Mode. In this, you are being attacked by a stream of planes, helicopters, blimps, and tanks, and must blow them up as swiftly as possible, without letting any get past you. This is harder than it sounds, and adds some nice replay value once you have finished the levels proper- or if you just want to challenge yourself a bit.

The graphics are very bright and cartoony, which makes the whole enterprise just adorable! This might be the cutest kaiju monster ever. The backgrounds are also good looking with some nice detail, but never too much to be overwhelming and distracting so you forget what you are looking at.

The gameplay is responsive and easy, on my tablet. According to some comments, it has a bad habit of not working on certain kinds of phones (specifically, HTCs for some reason). However, barring that kind of wonkiness, this is casual gaming at its most enjoyable- easy to pick up, hard to master, without feeling too repetitive.

You can download this game for free, right now! So, if you are a fan of kaiju stuff, and want a nice little time waster that coincides with that, this game is heartily recommended.
